NEW TO ALEXANDRIA?

Moving to a new city is a challenge, so we’ve attempted to help you assimilate.

Below you’ll find some of the best places to visit in Alexandria, courtesy of Office Barn, because we’re awesome.

GETTING TO KNOW ALEXANDRIA

Alexandria began as a complementary settlement to a nearby Spanish outpost. Merchants and agriculturally employed settlers lived in the untamed, Louisiana wilderness, linking larger cities like Natchitoches and El Camino Real together. In 1785, Pennysylvanian Alexander Fulton bought the Alexandria area as a land grant from the Spanish government.

Trading with the surrounding tribes of Indians was the perfect situation for Fulton and his partner William Miller, because they were authorized to allow payment of overdue bills in land, not furs as was customary. In this way, Fulton and Miller made an enormous profit, trading trinkets for thousands of acres and then selling the land to pioneers.

In 1805, Fuller laid out the plans for the city of Alexandria. The origin of the name has been disputed by historians, but it has been generally decided that it was named for either Alexander Fuller himself, or his young daughter who passed away at the town’s conception.

On March 18, 1819, Alexandria was recognized as an incorporated town by the state of Louisiana, and it’s population of farmers swelled accordingly.

The Civil War did not treat Alexandria well. The city was occupied in the spring of 1863 by Union forces. After they were done pillaging and destroying the lives of the citizens of Alexandria, the Northern soldiers ruthlessly set the city ablaze. 90% of the place went up in flames, including the Episcopalian and Methodist churches.

After the Civil War, Alexandria grew even more, and its inhabitants realized that they were surrounded by very usable forests. As the ‘sawmill capital of the world’ opened its eyes, 75 sawmills were built and industry bustled within a 40-mile radius of Alexandria. All this lumber needed to be exported, and soon Alexandria became a hub of railroad activity.

World War II was a hard time for all of America, but Alexandria became a swarm of military activity. Within 30 miles, three camps and the Alexandria Army Air Base had erupted within the harvested forests. Rationing began in the city as the everyday necessities were shipped overseas for the men fighting for peace.

Post-War Alexandria only got better. They had survived the war, and now they were open for business. Several eateries and entertainment centers opened, and people flooded in. In 1957, Alexandria celebrated being in existence for 150 years.

Such a resilient, prosperous city deserves your business. And your business deserves the best possible office furniture services–which is why Office Barn is here.
