TEXARKANA, A BRIEF HISTORY

Texarkana? What, that city on three state lines, right?

Actually, the name is misleading. Texarkana was built on the state line of Texas and Arkansas in 1873, over the bones of Caddo Indian villages. The new town’s main street was named State Line Avenue, built over the border itself. So where does the “-ana” come in? When it was named, most people thought the Louisiana border was merely a couple miles away. In reality, it lies thirty miles from Texarkana.

There are at least three legends describing how Texarkana gained its name. In 1860, there was a steamboat named the Texarkana that carried imports and exports up and down the Red River; some people think it was after this steamboat the city of two states was named. Another legend has it that a man in Louisiana created a drink named ‘Texarkana Bitters’, and the name was transposed to the town. But the most likely story is that of Colonel Gus Knobel and his sign.

In 1883, the St. Louis, Iron Mountain, and Southern Railroad crossed through Texarkana. Colonel Gus Knobel surveyed the area, and, in a bold decision, coined the name ‘Texarkana’ from the three surrounding states and erected a sign stating that this was the town’s name.

Whatever the true story, Texarkana has always been a central point for the Southwest. Several railroads have found their way through Texarkana, and natural resources, such as lumber, minerals, and agricultural pursuits, are also a source of economic diversity.

By 1896, the population had reached 14,000. Though the Great Depression made Texarkana suffer just as it did all other cities in America, by the 1940s the city had grown exponentially. By 1960, the population was an enormous 50,006.

Today, Texarkana boasts a college, three major hospitals, and a population of over 120,132. We are proud to serve Texarkana businesses with our products and services, and, whether your office is in Arkansas or Texas, we appreciate your contribution to the great city of two states.
