GETTING TO KNOW SHREVEPORT

There the Red River lay, clear at last. 180 miles of debris had been removed by Captain Henry Miller Shreve and the US Army Corps of Engineers. The Texas Trail, which led thousands of settlers into the newly liberated West, lay across the now-navigable Red River. At their crossroads, the Shreve Town Company, named after Captain Shreve, determined that a city should be built.

In 1838, the Caddo Parish (or County) was sectioned off and the newly instated Shreve Town was named the parish seat. It remains that way today. On March 20, 1839, the town of Shreveport was incorporated.

1871 saw Shreveport incorporated as a city. From there, the city only grew. By 1967, Shreveport had gained the Louisiana State University campus as one of its many attractions. Second only to New Orleans in historic landmarks, today Shreveport is known for its commerce and transportation, as well as its college.
