GETTING TO KNOW MOUNT PLEASANT

Titus County’s seat is located in the rolling hills of southern Texas, where it was chosen as a lot of undeveloped land to become the county’s center.

Mount Pleasant was founded, incorporated, and named the county seat in 1846. The land was given to the cause by early settlers, among whom were John Binion, Sr., L. Gilbert, and Burrell and Richard Moore, who were brothers.

Mount Pleasant’s population rambled along comfortably until the early 1880s. The Texas and St. Louis Railway offered the town an opportunity to boom, which Mount Pleasant promptly did. By 1885, the population had grown to around 800 residents.

The 1900s brought tourism to Mount Pleasant, due to the red mineral springs near the city. Packaging meats, processing poultry and lumber, and feed milling were some of the economic activities that supported Mount Pleasant through the Depression.

Titus County’s county seat’s population suffered under the barrage of debt and confusion that the 1930s offered to all of America. Businesses dropped from 190 to 121 during the 1930s.

However, Mount Pleasant didn’t stay in the Depression for very long. By 1990, the population had risen to 12,291. During the early 1990s Mount Pleasant obtained the Northeast Texas Community College campus, and students from three counties—Camp, Morris, and Titus—flooded the population.

Today, Mount Pleasant is a thriving center for commercial trade, and yet it has retained enough of its natural beauty to truly live up to its name.
