NEW TO JACKSONVILLE?

Moving to a new town, working in a new environment…it’s all stressful. We want your move to be smooth and pleasant. Here’s a list of some of our favorite places to visit in Jacksonville.

GETTING TO KNOW JACKSONVILLE

In the aftermath of the brutal disappearance of eighteen settlers in 1838, General Thomas J. Rusk and the Texas Army came in search of those responsible for the worst massacre in East Texas. General Rusk sent soldiers out to scout the banks of the chuckling Gum Creek for the lost settlers. Kentucky native Jackson Smith, soldier of the Texas Army, stumbled upon a hidden haven of the woods. He stood, arms limp at his sides, staring at the pine trees, the softly accented maples, and the towering oaks. Here, he thought to himself, is home. Here I stay.

And that is how the town of Gum Creek, today Jacksonville, began. Nine years after the Killough Massacre, Jackson Smith returned to his quiet spot of the woods. He built a cabin and a blacksmith’s shop, and then a post office. The town grew slowly but steadily, as settlers trickled in.

Jacksonville expanded further when in 1872 the International-Great Northern Railroad was built within two miles of the town. Over the next ten years, the town became a great producer of peaches, and after that were prominent in tomato production. In the 1950s, Jacksonville became known as the ‘Tomato Capital of the World.’

Today, over 500 businesses have been opened in the town of Jackson Smith’s dreams. Jacksonville is growing, slowly but surely, into a busy town. Our job is to help Jacksonville become great, one office at a time.
