NEW TO GARLAND?

Moving to a new city is always challenging, so we’ve attempted to make your transition a little sweeter.

Below you’ll find links to city data and some of our favorite places in Garland. We hope this helps you learn to love this city like we do!

WELCOME TO THE PLACE WHERE TEXAS WAS MADE.

Garland began as a piece of land owned by W. S. Peters. The Peters colony consisted of expansive amounts of land around the today Dallas area. Settlers began living in the Peters colony in 1850. A few settled near a little chuckling brook named Duck Creek. As America grew, her new state, Texas, became open to more and more settlers seeking new land. Some made their homes in the Peters colony. The settlement that was to become Garland became known in 1874 by the name Duck Creek.

Duck Creek’s soil was dark and fertile, and settlers wasted no time in planting that trademark Texas crop, cotton. Two cotton gins had been erected in 1867, and as proof of their expansion a post office came into existence in 1878.

1886 was a year of change for little Duck Creek. The Santa Fe Railroad made its way through the area, planting a depot and rail line almost a mile away from Duck Creek. A village named after Dr. K.H. Embree rose up near the depot, and the proximity to the railway drew many of Duck Creek’s inhabitants to the new village. The post office also moved to service Embree.

However, 1886 had one victory for Duck Creek. Another railroad, the Missouri, Kansas & Texas Railroad (MK&T) was built through the Peters colony, independently from the Santa Fe Railroad. MK&T established another station, and named it Duck Creek.

Duck Creek and Embree became embittered enemies as each town sought to grab the former Duck Creek inhabitants and claim the post office for their own. Finally, the two towns decided that a compromise was necessary. The post office was moved to in between the rival villages in 1887. In 1891, the area was firmly stripped of both the names Duck Creek and Embree and slapped together as a new city named Garland.

Today, Garland is host to many manufacturing companies, including Kraft Foods and Sherwin Williams. It was once Duck Creek. It was a divided, arguable colony. Then it was united into the city it is today by two railroads, a compromise, and a post office.

People of Garland proudly wear the slogan, ‘Texas Was Made Here.’ We are proud to serve Garland businesses, and we look forward to helping your office’s appearance match the prestige of the city around it.
