NEW TO ATHENS?

Whether you’re coming to Athens from Dallas, looking for an escape from the bustle of a busy city, or you simply heard it was a great town and decided to bring your office here, the move can be stressful. We know. Even with the services we provide, the new environment can be intimidating. So we have decided to try and help.

Below you’ll find links to city data and some of our favorite places in Athens. Enjoy!

GETTING TO KNOW ATHENS

The seat of Henderson County began in 1850, with the arrival of settlers E.J Thompson and Jab McManus. Matthew Cartwright donated the land for the county seat, which at the time was uncultivated save for a rough menagerie of streets and a rustic city square. The district court of 1850 met under an oak in the city square for lack of a building. The next month, the first courthouse was erected.

Athens grew rapidly, but still retained the charm of a small town. Cotton was the main economic crop until the Great Depression. The shifting of an entire nation caught Athens up in its upheaval, and livestock became the city’s main source of support.

In the 1950’s, Athens businesses were primarily comprised of a furniture plant, an electronics manufacturer, an apparel manufacturer, and a cannery. Progression into the latter twentieth century saw Athens become home to several other businesses, including banks, newspapers, and libraries. The Trinity Valley Community College drew over 4,460 students to Athens in 1990.

Athens has been growing comfortably. Abundant, prosperous businesses can be found, nestled by Lake Athens or strewn across the picturesque landscape. Athens is an escape for some, from the strain and bustle of living in a big city. It is a place of cultivated memories for others. All types of businesses, all types of people, from all over Texas, have learned to call Athens home. We proudly serve Athens and her people, providing top-quality furniture for a top-quality town. Just let us know what you need.
